CLEAN UP GUILDERLAND 2024

Local businesses join hands for clean-up of town

Guilderland, NY: On Saturday April 27, more than 100 volunteers will come together in Guilderland to clean the streets starting at 11am with two separate orientations/supply pick-ups. The west-side orientation will be at The Star Plaza parking lot on the corner of Western Avenue and Rt 155, and the east-side will be located in the Crossgates parking lot next to the Tru & Homewood Suites by Hilton hotel.  The groups will spread along each block and intersection on Western Ave between the highway and Rt 155 and will be wearing bright orange shirts.

In addition to this event, Tawasentha Park is hosting a clean-up day coordinated by the Guilderland Parks Department, a Recycling Extravaganza event is being held at Farnsworth Middle School and National Drug Take Back Day at the Guilderland Library.

On Friday April 26, local businesses are participating in the clean-up at noon. Participants include:

Saturday April 27 groups and locations:

Sponsors included West Winds Contracting, who will be in charge of picking up the garbage bags, Crossgates, who is offering volunteers, water and snacks, CM Fox who had purchased the t-shirts for volunteers and The Town of Guilderland who has donated a large bin at the transfer station to dump the garbage.

The effort’s coordinator, Kathy Burbank, started cleaning up litter many years ago where she worked, in her own neighborhood, and especially at beaches where the litter was going straight into the ocean.  Recently, she noticed a huge build-up last year in Guilderland.  Garbage was piling up rapidly, and when she posted on Facebook after a few clean-ups, people started volunteering to help. Several group clean-ups, and about 1,000 pounds of garbage later, businesses and families wanted to get involved, leading to the planning of this town-wide clean-up.  Burbank says “Litter is really everyone’s problem because the wind will just carry it along. It’s not a business or resident’s fault that trash is gathering at their place.”
